So, what exactly is alopecia?  The bottom line is:  Alopecia = hair loss.  Now, the reasons behind that hair loss may vary.  The most common forms of Alopecia are male and female pattern baldness.  Here is a break-down of the different types of Alopecia:

• Male pattern baldness - This is the most common.  Men usually take notice when the hairline begins to recede.  You may also see this referred to as androgenetic or androgenic.  The good news?  There are solutions (more below).
• Female pattern baldness - This form of alopecia is usually just due to the wonderful world of aging.  As we get older, our hormones change and so does our hair!  Again, there's hope (more below).
• Telogen effluvium - This form of alopecia is usually temporary.  It occurs during unfortunate diseases such as cancer, severe stress or medication.
• Cicatricial alopecia - This unfortunate form of alopecia is permanent and it occurs due to destroyed hair folicles.  It's also referred to as scarring alopecia and it's not very common at all.
• Alopecia areata - This form of alopecia doesn't always affect the scalp and it it sometimes comes and goes.  It's believed to be caused by an immune system disorder.  The hair loss basically occurs in visible patches and unlike female and male pattern baldness, it typically affects young adults and those in their teen years.
• Anagen effluvium - Like Telogen effluvium, this form of alopecia is generally associated with cancer.  However, it's from the treatment chemicals.  Hair will typically begin to grow back in approximately 6 months following treatment.
